The Google Places feature is a great tool for both the consumer that is looking for a local business and for a local business that wants to be found by more consumers.

For the consumer, you can search Google on your computer for something like "Computer Repair Sugar Land". At the top of the results you will see a list of local businesses with a map showing where each is located. You can easily see which is closest to you and ratings from other consumers. If you click on the business name, you will be taken to their web site. Click on the "Place Page" link to the right of their name and you are taken to the Google Places page for that business. On this page, the business owner can list things like their business hours, description of the business and accepted forms of payment. You will often see reviews here so you can get a feel for the experiences other consumers had with this business.

If you perform the same search on many smart phones like Android or iPhone, you will see the list of businesses with large buttons to get directions and to dial them. This is very convenient when you are looking for a close by restaurant or bank. To make it even a little easier to use, there is a Google Places app for both Android and iPhone. The app allows you to store your own custom searches with large icons. So you might store a search for restaurants or gas stations so you can retrieve a local list with just a couple taps of your finger.

For the local retail business owner, Google Places is a must have tool for marketing. Do any sort of search for Computer Repair or Virus Removal on Google Places and you will see that SugarLandPC ranks very high. We have been working with our Google Places page quite a while to achieve good ranking.

The first thing a business needs to do is to search for and "claim" your business in Google Places. Once you have done this, you can start making changes to the page. You need to add lots of photos and even video if possible. Add lots of text about the products and services offered by your business. You can also add up to five categories for your business. If you have a restaurant, talk about your kid's meals and specials. Put your menu on the page. The more information you enter, the better.

With so many people searching from mobile devices today, every retail business should fully utilize their Google Places page. It's absolutely free and your competition may already be doing it.

Be sure to search the Android Market or iPhone App Store for the Google Places app.

If you know of a business that might need help with Google Places or have other IT needs in Houston, please tell them about SugarLandPC.
