Drop Box

Computers today are almost magical, but what I think really makes them amazing is the new and creative application ideas that sharp minds keep coming up with. The desktop computer has not changed a lot in the last few years, but many, many new and innovative applications have been built to run on them. Here is another example.

How many times have you been sitting in front of your computer and wished you had convenient access to a photo on your phone or tablet. Or maybe you've been at the store wishing you had that shopping list that's on your computer at the house. Well the folks at DropBox have a very nice solution for you.

Imagine a magic box on your desktop computer at home. The same box is on your laptop, your PC at work, your iPad, your Kindle Fire, your Android phone and if it isn't already available... probably on your TV soon. This is not multiple magic boxes. Not one for each device. It's one box. The contents of that box are the same no matter which device you use to take the lid off of it.

This is DropBox. Any document, picture, song or video that you put into your DropBox folder is automatically synched to the DropBox folder on all your devices. Now you can access your files from anywhere. DropBox has free accounts that hold 2GB and they have much larger paid for accounts that can hold 1 Terabyte or more so your whole office team can share one box.

DropBox is very easy to use. To begin, go to http://dropbox.com and click "Login" in the upper right corner, then click on "Create Account". Enter your name, email and password then create your account. The next page will display several links including links to install the DropBox software on your computer and mobile devices.

Start by installing DropBox on your computer. During the installation you will have to enter the email and password you used to create the account and you will get to choose between the free DropBox account with a 2GB limit or larger paid accounts. You will also get to select the location for the special DropBox folder on your computer. Once the installation is complete, go ahead and copy a few files into the DropBox folder.

Now on your mobile device, search the App Store or Market for the DropBox app and install it. Start the DropBox app on your device and connect it to the account you just created. The app will ask you if you want to automatically upload videos and photos from the device. What an easy way to get them to your computer! Once the app has finished synching, you will be able to see the files you added to DropBox from your computer.

DropBox has other features too like the ability to share photos in your DropBox with friends. Visit DropBox.com and watch their tutorial videos for more information.
